| One Huge Problem!!!! | | I have one very large and valid concern about the healthcare debaucle congress is trying to pass. When I look at the classified ads for just my local paper (town of less than 100K) there are two professions that anyone can go get a job doing immediately if they are qualified. Those are truck drivers and nurses! Truck driver ads take up about 30% of the classifieds and nurse ads about 40 and I'm sure in the big cities like NY, LA, Dallas ETC. the percentage is the same. Also, I have a small heart condition which my cardioligist monitors annually but to get an appointment I have to make it for the next year before I leave to be sure to get in! Again, this is in a small market! I believe anyone would agree that America has a dangerous shortage of medical professionals so here is my question:Given the present shortage of medical professionals, how does the president and congress even pretend to be able to introduce 40 million plus people into an already overburdened system in the next 4 years without bringing it to a complete collapse? The president and congress want to assure people that there will be no rationing but this "new" system will start behind and will never catch... | |

| Electric Lift Chair | | I need some help as to where I can buy an electric lift chair. My dad needs one badly as he ruined the one he had. It is beyond repair. These chairs lift the seat area up so the person is almost standing and thus making it easier and less stressful to get in and out of the chair. I am in Minnesota USA and want to find one in a decent price range. I've checked online and found some anywqhere from $600 and up. He is paying and willing to spend up to $800 possibly higher. But I want to buy one at a store and not online. All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance all.

| Do you want medical care from the 'cheapest in town'? | | I was listening to Jeff Foxworthy tonight and he said something very interesting: He had seen a billboard claiming that an eye clinic had the cheapest LASIK surgery in town. He replied that if he was to go to a place that did eye surgery, he would want to go to someone with a little more pride in his work. Why the slogan "Cheapest in town"?
Why do we endeavor to lower the cost of medical care? Do you really want to be treated by healthcare practioners claiming they cost less that others? Would you want to have your doctor treat you using equipment from the lowest bidder? Two issues that drive medical costs: wages for the healthcare workers, and cost of medical equipment/pharmaceuticals.My belief is that you would not want to cut wages for the doctors, nurses, pharmacists, radiology techs, laboratory techs, etc (conflict of interest notice: I am a medical technologist and work in a hosptial laboratory). But, to me, the real culprit is the cost of medical equipment and pharmaceuticals.
Example:
Most of us have seen the nylon, padded 'coolers' with the zipped lid. The coast US$9.95 to US$19.95 depending on size. Put a medical emblem on it, call it a specimen...

| The worry of getting lost luggage | | My younger son needs to have catheter care so on a two week trip I need to pack three boxes of them and for a month I have to take six boxes of them. If my luggage was lost then I don't think with the language barrier it would be easy for me the get replacements. Having lost clothes would be sad but getting lost medical equipment would be very worrying. What would you dread getting lost in your luggage when going traveling?
They are packed in water so would that make it difficult for me to pack the catheters in my hand luggage?
Have you come across restrictions on hand luggage?

| For those who have lost a loved one. | | I recently lost my husband after a prolonged illness. He was in Hospice more than two years. While sad, his death is also a blessing. I know he is no longer suffering and that eases my mind. So far I am experiencing what I think are normal ups and downs, including periods of numbness. The worst day was when Hospice came to pick up all the medical equipment he had used for so long. I cried for quite awhile afterward, then went to sleep. When I woke I was still sad, but not so devastated.
I know everyone experiences grief in different ways. I wondered if some of you would share what some of your worst moments were and how you handled it.

| Robots taking over the planet? | | Tonight I watched (again) a movie called I Robot. Its an interesting movie about robots built to assist man and protect us. However the main computer takes it too far and trys to take over everything. These days many plants used automated machines. Everyone has computers, faxes, etc. Even medical equipment is now automated or computer run. Just like the old Terminator movies where they took over. Do you think all of these automated machines or robots are a good idea? Are we really helping ourselves by creating them? Or are we putting our future at risk? | |

| Congress is FORCING Medicare to waste millions/billions of dollars EVERY year! | | Many people do not realize that the price Medicare pays for medical equipment and medical services is set by Congress. That's right! Congress establishes how to determine what should be paid for any specific item that Medicare pays for and then puts that amount into effect across the nation.Well, we all know about effects of lobbyists on our politicians and medical equipment providers and other sections of the medical community have never been shy about using lobbyists. The American people have complained for years about high medical costs and the fact that Medicare has serious money problems. Our Congressmen swear they WILL do something about it; and then, out trot the lobbyists with their fists full of cash and nothing gets accomplished. An example of this is going on in Congress right now - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/25/business/25leonhardt.html?th&emc=th This proposal had the potential to make some serious changes and reduce the annual cost of Medicare without depriving anyone of the medical equipment and treatments that they need. Instead, the lobbyists have crawled out of the woodwork with their fists full of cash and our Congressmen are already backing... | |
